The towns in Park County have a rich history which was acknowledged on March 30, 2009 when President Obama signed federal legislation to designate South Park a National Heritage Area.  It is one of 49 in the nation and only three in Colorado.

One of the many places of interest near Alma is the Paris Mill, just a short distance west of town up Buckskin Gulch.  Built in 1894, the mill processed ore delivered via carts and cables from the mines high up on the ridge above it.  The property was recently purchased by Park County and steps will be taken to preserve this amazing site for the future.

The spectacular Bristlecone Pine forest with 1,000-year-old trees can be found above Alma and is accessable by passenger vehicles to a point then high clearance vehicles or on foot for the last 1/2 mile or so.

The South Park Museum in nearby Fairplay houses more than 40 historic buildings from around the state.  They are put together to recreate a typical old Colorado mining town and include seven that are still sitting in their original location.  The museum is open for tours from May 15 to October 15 every year.

A short drive northeast from Alma you will find the railroad Roundhouse in Como.  Built in the 1880s, it was constructed around a turntable of railroad tracks with bays to house the locomotives that were brought in for maintenance.  Italian stonemasons created the building in 1881.

But, with all the history in the area, Park County is full of modern fun.  In June and July local activities include the South Park Music Tour, July 4th celebrations in several towns, the Park County Fair, the annual Ladies Run, the Alma Festval in the Clouds and of course the annual Burro Days weekend celebration.  In August, there is the Boreas Pass Railroad Day just outside of Como.

We have fabulous fishing right near Alma at Montgomery Reservoir located on the north end of Placer Valley.  Or, travel a little farther south in Park County to Antero, Spinney, Tarryall or Eleven Mile Reservoirs.  Looking for an even more alpine fishing spot?  Try Kite and Emma Lakes west of Alma up the Buckskin Gulch road.  If rivers are more to your liking we can offer the Middle Fork of the South Platte, South Fork of the South Platte and North Fork of the South Platte all running through Park County.

And of course we have hiking and biking trails galore for summer enjoyment.  Fall hunting with one of our local hunting guides will not disappoint in either abundant wildlife or spectacular scenery.  In the winter, ice climing on Lincoln falls near Montgomery Reservoir is among the best in the state and cross country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities are everywhere.  If downhill skiing is something you have always wanted to try, Alma is just 16 miles from the Breckenridge ski area.

And then, there are the "Fourteeners" right in Alma's back yard.  You can cross Lincoln, Cameron, Democrat and Bross all off your climbing list while you are here.  And there are dozens of twelve and thirteen thousand foot peaks in the Mosquito Range to keep you climbing and hiking for days.

In Alma, our small town hospitality can be found in every store and restaurant.  Need some fun new clothes or serious outdoor gear?  Don't miss shopping in The Motherlode and OutYaGo Mountain Gear.  If you need some gifts for those you left at home, then please visit Buckskin Joes Trading Co., The Sheepherder, Al-Mart, Hairy Situations or Hoosier Daddy.  When you are ready to relax and have a bite to eat, try The South Park Saloon, the Alma Coffee House and Natural Foods orAlma's Only Bistro

And if you simply are not ready to go home yet, stay another day and explore some more!  The beautiful Mountain Comfort Bed and Breakfast just south of Alma on highway 9 is ready for you.
